Stretching inland from the Atlantic coast, the Western Loire or 'Pays de la Loire' region is dominated by the magic of the River Loire. The five departements of Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe & Vendee go to make this area, with a temperate climate and friendly people an ideal location for family holidays and, of course, for visiting the wonderful Chateaux.
It was an area much fought over, as shown by the many medieval castles, while the chateaux - Chambord, Blois, or Azay-le Rideau - remind us that for years the French Kings held their court on the banks of the Loire.
Its 450 kilometres of coastline provide an unrivalled richness of maritime landscape: famous seaside resorts, traditional fishing villages as well as salt marches. Plus it is also a region with some exceptional events: the 24-hour Le Mans Race, the Vendee Globe, the Folle Journee, the Cadre Noir in Saumur and the Grand Parc at Le Puy du Fou.
