The region is varied and covers part of the Jura with its mountain tops and lakes, the rich pasturelands of Bresse, the Beajolais vineyard, the beginning of the Monts du Forez and the Massif Central, the Velais and Vivarais areas, the highlands of the Lyon area and the southern Alpes.
It is also home of the highest mountains in Europe, its wide alpine pasturelands and magnificent scenery have long attracted visitors both in winter and summer, as it is an ideal area for those who enjoy the outdoor life - skiing, rambling, mountain-climbing, fishing or sailing are all readily available. Over 60% of all France's winter holidaying takes place in this region with 40 big resorts and 780 miles of skiing.
