Although you automatically think of the Mediterranean sun and sea, with its famous beaches and ports on the Riviera, this region also offers a unique opportunity to discover a completely new aspect of this wonderful French province and is well worth reading about before you go on holiday. In fact, most people probably have not heard of the departements Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Hautes-Alpes, Alpes-Maritimes, Bouches-du-Rhone, Var & Vaucluse which all go to make up this well know region of France.
The hinterland, apart from the Alpes, is less well known yet offers thousand year old villages perched on high peaks, sun-soaked vineyards, hectares of lavender fields and breathtaking views. Coast and interior alike are remarkable for their natural beauty, their nature conservation parks (Les Ecrins, Port-Cros, the Camargue, Queyras and the Luberon) which can be enjoyed from early spring to the autumn and their country holiday amenities - walking, cycling, riding, climbing and skiing.
There is also a range of interesting historic towns: Avignon with its Popes' Palaces; Aix-en-Provence with its fountains; Marseilles, the earliest Greek city of the west (now France's chief port); Cannes and Nice for their beaches, Menton for its citroen festival; Grasse, a city of perfumes and for those who enjoy painting, there is memories of Fernand Leger at Biot, Matisse at Vence, Picasso at Antibes and Dufy in Nice.
