Two beautiful provinces within easy access of the United Kingdom, both these regions are rich in ancient archaeology, abounding in splendid architectural and historic monuments. Be they war memorials, castles or Picardy's six imposing cathedrals, they all hold memories of the great days gone by.
NORD-PAS-DE-CALAIS consists of two Departments, Nord and Pas-de-Calais and is an area of different landscapes including the hills around Boulogne, the windmills of French Flanders as well as the marshlands and immense forests. The 'Opal Coast' with its 80 miles of sandy beaches and unspoilt dunes are ideally suited for sand sports. Le Touquet is an internationally famous resort with lots of chic boutiques as well as a casino; Boulogne is one of France's foremost fishing ports and Calais is, of course, a major port for passenger boats. Lille became a European City of Culture with lots to see and do in the city. This includes a real shoppers' paradise with two factory outlets in Roubaix giving large discounts on designer clothes and more (Details at L'Usine)
This is a hospitable region with carnivals (ducasses) and big fairs, still very popular and some of the richest museums in France.
PICARDY is predominantly a rural area with the departements of Aisne, Oise & Somme. There are the undulating countryside along the Oise with its white stone villages; the calm of the woods and pastures of the Vimeu area with its mud brick buildings; the plainness of the fortified churches of the Thierache country and the gentle meandering of the Somme. Often referred to as 'the French Ardennes' this area is full of great forests - Chantilly, Compiegne, Retz, Halatte, Hez, Saint-Gobain, Crecy and Coucy - where ramblers, cyclists and riders will find it ideal.
