This region is naturally dominated by Paris but offers a wide range of magnificent monuments and a large selection of leisure activities in the surrounding departements of Seine-et-Marne, Essonne, Yvelines & Val-d'Oise.
Local events and festivals are staged in many of the quaint and pretty villages which remain very rural. The Ile-de-France was once an entirely wooded scenery and the remaining forests lie near the chateaux of this area which range from Versailles, which is France's most visited historic building, to the other royal residence of Fontainebleau.
Other sites to visit include: Dampierre's grounds; Rambouillet; Saint-Germain's museum and splendid view; Ecouen's Renaissance museum; Vaux-le-Vicomte with Le Notre's famous gardens; Thoiry's unique safari zoo; Port-Royal, the seat of Jansenism, deep in its solitary valley; and last but not least Disneyland Paris. It is so close that you can pop over for just a couple of days. For travelling by rail, sea or air go to our travel page.
