This is not a well known French Region to the British and certainly all the richer for it. An ancient province rising from 800 to 5,580 feet along the Jura Mountains between the Rhine and Rhone, from the valley of the Saone to the Swiss frontier.
The departments of Doubs, Jura, Haute-Saone & Territoire-de-Belfort offer a land of mountains, unspoilt countryside, clear running rivers and warm but temperate climate: this is a true area for country lovers who wish to flee the stress of city life. Its mountain passes, gorges, characteristic blind valleys (Salins, Arbois, Poligny) and zig-zag mountain roads, all make this area a suitable place to explore - on foot, horseback, cycle or skis.
Local specialities of the Region include Morteau sausage, Comte cheese and Arbois & Jura wines.
