The heartland and the highlands of France with the departments of Allier, Cantal, Haute-Loire & Puy-de-Dome. To explore this region of extinct volcanoes and assess the upheavals they must once have caused, the best thing is to go on foot or bicycle.
The nature conservation park (250,000 acres) has hundreds of miles of blazed footpaths. The crater of the Cantal must once have measured 20 miles across. There is also the Sancy, and the 60 volcanoes of the Domes. The secondary effect is the high plateaux of Combrailles, the Livradois, Forez, Bourbonnais and Velay highlands, and the gorges of the Allier and Loire, with their castles and Romanesque churches.
